GNE Connections4

Another service that has had a refresh was the MetroLink Service M1 which ran from Easington Lane to Heworth Interchange. This time more of a dramatic change came in the form of brand new Mercedes-Benz Citaro’s which were painted in a dark blue colour branded as ‘Connections4’ removing the old ‘M’ and ‘MetroLink’ brand which had been used since the day of Leyland Nationals. The route was then cut to Easington Lane with the service now terminating at Houghton-le-Spring. The idea is the 4 being used as modern text message speak in the context of: Connections4 Washington, Connections4 Houghton, Connections4 Metro and so on… These vehicles are part of a new standard for Go North East with all new vehicles featuring free customer wi-fi onboard and next stop announcements and display screens. These don’t actually have plug sockets unlike other services, probably down to the amount of stopping points and the route is fairly short compared to the likes of the Tyne Tees Express. These Citaro’s are also to a newer specification to the older examples as they have full forward-facing only seats, a low floor entry emergency exit door and a more modern stopping bell… The previously used Scania L94UB / Wright Solar’s were cascaded onto the Waggonway services 28/28A to withdraw the DAF SB220 / Plaxton Prestiges. 5368 shows off the new sleek livery which now dominates this corridor.
