2013 was a major milestone for Go North East, having operated motorbus services in the North East for 100 years. Starting out with a fleet of small Daimler Double-Deckers on the 7th May 1913 operating a single route from Chester-le-Street to Low Fell under the name Northern General Omnibus. The route still running this way 100 years later as the Angel 21, the Low Fell terminus also still standing. Go North East are the region’s largest bus company, with 670 vehicles and more than 2,000 staff, they are also the founding company of the Go-Ahead Group which is now the UK’s fifth largest transport operator and the biggest bus company in London. Therfore GNE had a few celebrations, one was at Beamish Musuem where their old Daimler replica was posed aside the modern counterpart; that being a Volvo B5LH / Wright Gemini 2. They also had a celebration outside the Chester-le-Street garage and now above the arch over the main door is an original ‘Northern’ fleetname. Also, included within these celebrations was Optare Versa 8319, which has been painted in a striking livery to show the centenary, 8319 is a Deptford vehicle and working 39 service to Doxford Park. 8319 100 Years
